Movie review "The Reluctant Fundamentalist"

Movie review:"The Reluctant Fundamentalist " By Mira Nair.

This blog is a part of my class room activity of postcolonial studies film : The Reluctant Fundamentalist.

Click here to show given this task.

            "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" it is a political thriller drama and film based on the 2007 novel ,The reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid and movie directed by Mira Nair. In this film a young Pakistani man is changez corporate success on wall street where he find himself embroiled in conflict between his American dream, a hostage crisis, and the enduring call of his family.The story is recounted in flashback by Changez, now an academic back in Lahore, to an American journalist on the trail of a kidnapped professor.

           In this film we clearly see that relation between east and west. We find power and capitalism there. And postcolonial aspect we may say that changez has many identity.As we all know that post colonialism its all about language and Changez use their language.

                      " I am both a native of this city and a speaker of your language."

In this sentence showing that he is different from the the rest of native people. Changez has great belief in American economy and capitalism. He works for American companies but suddenly after 9/11 all things are changed for him.that how America look toward him ,that historical event 9/11 attacked on Afghanistan on the world tread center in America reflect the reality .Changez suspected as a terrorist because of his religious -Islam.And he make friend with love in one American lady,but after the attack of his colleagues he started misbehaving with him. we find that post colonialism aspect here when Changez was suffer for his name,look, identity and his religious Muslim are disrespected by American .
         So it is very useful movie about racism, post colonialism ,business mindset and American dreams of third world.With the character of Changez we come to know the condition of an outsider in American ration world.

Movie review "Midnight Children".

Movie review "Midnight Children"

                This blog is a part of my classroom activity of postcolonial studies Film screening : "Midnight Children".

Here is the blob link given this task.

              "Midnight children" this  movie based on the famous novel writer and Booker prize winner Salman Rushdie and this movie is directed by Deepa mehta and screen by Salman Rushdie.this film based on India  before independent and after independent colonial and postcolonial aspect.Its about the political power and superiority. This film story about India, is told though a smaller one, about a family, and especially one boy Saleem Sinai. Saleem Sinai is a hero and roll of his played by British actor Satya Bhabha. This movie start with Indian city also end with same. Saleem life run out that the political ,social ,linguistic and cultural strife faced the newly independent India.And there is meta narration of Muslim its challenge by marginalization.

                 We see in this movie things like telepathic,and Saleem's telepathy is a way for us to imagine the difficulty of containing multitudes in one body and not just Saleem body but also politic of nation of India. that in the movie we see magic realism that Saleem was eventually find a way to hear their  "Like calling out to like" It call like a magic and there is underneath the crasy clamor of all the other voices is a sign of hope in a novel that keeps telling us how saleem and India is literary spilitting apart and dying. When the midnight children's join saleem for chatty, contentious meeting , the camera's focus goes soft , which seems fitting , as the children are mostly indistinct here practically an afterthought , and without much metaphorical power.And in any case , they take a back seat to saleem and his family's story . There are infants switched at birth one rich, one poor, revelations about parenthood , amnesia, war, riots, sudden shifts in fortune and, most satisfyingly, a kind of mother-son reunion between Saleem and his ayah that would do a Bombay talkie proud.

             Historical time in India as well as Bangladesh history , Indian history like the independence movement, two civil war with Pakistan arising of the Bangladesh as a new nation,emergency during Indira Gandhi was prime minister of India. In a sense we see in this film this all are recorded of history and Indian culture too.

                       Little magic is also reflected with Paravti's  - Abracadabra we see in this film that character of Parvati present magic realism.Through her magic and through her magic skill she changes the situation and save saleem life.

"The Birthday Party" by "Harold Pinter".

Post viewing task of The Birthday Party.

Respected sir,

Here Link of this Blog.

Here Is my view about post viewing task " The Birthday Party".

1)Why are two scenes of Lulu omitted from the movie?

           Stanley Webber is the protagonist of the play around whom the story revolves.Lulu  presence in the play by the side of the older woman intensifies, if anything the disparaged image of the feminine.were there in last act, the audience would focus on the character of a woman who was abused by men and Lulu would have been judged as victim rather than the protagonist.

2)Is movie successful in giving us the effect of menace? Where you able to feel it while reading the text?

          Yes movies is successful in giving us the effect of menace.In this play where each and every character passing one or unknown fear.But in the text I find that effect in co conversation between Goldberg and Mccann and Stanley.And also we feel that Stanley has a mysterious past about which we dont know.

3) Do you feel the effect of lurking danger while viewing the movie? Where you able to feel the same while reading the text

        Yes I feel the lurking danger while viewing the movie.The sound of knowing the door, and cutting of newspaper sound.When the party was going that i feel lurking danger and something bad happen in the party, also they are plying the game of blind's man buff, This aal scene i fell lurking danger.

4)What do you read in 'newspaper' in the movie? Petey is reading newspaper to Meg, it torn into pieces by McCain, pieces are hidden by Petey in last scene.

         Newspaper is tools of communication and in this play it is highlighted. Petey is reading news and Meg is asking about news and it was routine for that.Meg has a short memory. And newspaper torn in to pieces by McCann but in a proper order and pieces are hidden or rather than show realistic.

5) Camera is positioned over the head of McCain when he is playing Blind Man's Buff and is positioned at the top with a view of room like a cage (trap) when Stanley is playing it. What interpretations can you give to these positioning of camera?

        In blind man's buff, the camera is positioned on the head of McCann which show ,he is overpower y his desire for catching Stanley. When Stanley is shown from the top of the room, it can bee seen as caught in the trap.

6)"Pinter restored theater to its basic elements: an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue, where people are at the mercy of one another and pretense crumbles." (Pinter, Art, Truth & Politics: Excerpts from the 2005 Nobel Lecture). Does this happen in the movie?

          Yes it happen in to the movie. There in the movie all character like Lulu, Meg, Petey and Stanley care for each other and there is spoken to by Stanley truth is introduce by petey and politics issues is exhibited by McCann and Goldberg.

7)How does viewing movie help in better understanding of the play ‘The Birthday Party’ with its typical characteristics (like pinteresque, pause, silence, menace, lurking danger)?

             Movie helps us better understanding of the play. The pauses & silence the effect of menace and lurking of danger it is very well in the movie but felt while reading the text and during the movie. we find that sound of cutting of newspaper, fear and mystique ,tolerant of dialogue in the movie.

8) With which of the following observations you agree:
             I agree that “It's impossible to imagine a better film of Pinter's play than this sensitive, disturbing version directed by William Friedkin

9)If you were director or screenplay writer, what sort of difference would you make in the making of movie?

           There is nothing to change in the movie . Because in the movie camera angel,lighting and close up of thing show trivial life.

10) Who would be your choice of actors to play the role of characters?

I would like to choose characters like this:

Stanley: Irfan Khan
Meg :     Juhi Chawla
Lulu:       Kalki koechlin
Goldberg: Imran Hasmi
McCann: John Abrahim.

Virtue
Poem by George Herbert:

Analysis:

             This poem "Virtue" by George Herbert is divided in a four stanza taking about Virtue as a primary concord true ,this poem the poet addresis virtue as what will live forever even after the discretion of the world.

             In the fist stanza poet take about a perfect day which is supposed to be ideal but as per the sical of the nature it has to and at one point in the time any thing that begins in the worlds has to necessarily end because anything in this material world is mortal by its very nature.

            In this poem next stanza there is deals with a swite rose which is in full bloom but its real beauty lies within in the roots of the plant and its external beauty has to die .One day as its beauty is not at all come not in this mortal world.

          In the next stanza poet takes about the spring season which know as the king of all season s and the nature around is as its best during this particular season every thing in the let of nature seems to be picture perfect but it has to an fortunately end with the up coming season what ever that is in he purview of nature is mortal in it self.

The Old Woman

Poem:

As a white candle
    In a holy place,
So is the beauty
    Of an aged face.

As the spent radiance
    Of the winter sun,
So is a woman
    With her travail done.

Her brood gone from her,
    And her thoughts as still
As the waters
    Under a ruined mill.

About the auther:

Joseph John Campbell (March 26, 1904 – October 30, 1987) was an American mythologist, writer, and lecturer, best known for his work in comparative mythology and comparative religion. His work covers many aspects of the human experience. Campbell's magnum opus is his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), in which he discusses his theory of the journey of the archetypal hero found in world mythologies. Since the book's publication, Campbell's theory has been consciously applied by a wide variety of modern writers and artists. His philosophy has been summarized by his own often repeated phrase: "Follow your bliss."

Analysis:

          The Old Woman by Joseph Campbell Portrayed a life of the old woman with all her major responsibility over and who his living her life in solitude.This poem consists of three stanzas with each stanza comparing her with three different aspect.

             In the fist stanza she is not bad compared with the purity,piousness,holiness and pees of the ambiance of the holi temple.As the white candle looks beautiful and chaste in the holi place,in the same manner she looks extremely beautiful in her old age.Here by saying that she is beautiful ,the poet wants to focus on the scene of satisfaction that can be seen on the face of the old woman.

            In the second stanza ,she is compared with the radiance of the winter sun.Which gives us a sans of calmness and happiness in the season where in the sun is required the most along with this in the poet Wallis to justify her long prevail pout with lots and lots her up and downs life.

           In the third stanza the comparison goes further when he compares her with the still water under the ruined mill the poet compares the stillness of the thought process as become static in nature.

           In this way the poet talks about the life of the old woman who is extremely serene in her presence.

Fear No More
Poem by William Shakespeare:

Poem:
Fear no more the heat o’ the sun,
Nor the furious winter’s rages;
Thou thy worldly task hast done,
Home art gone, and ta’en thy wages:
Golden lads and girls all must,
As chimney-sweepers, come to dust.

Fear no more the frown o’ the great;
Thou art past the tyrant’s stroke;
Care no more to clothe and eat;
To thee the reed is as the oak:
The scepter, learning, physic, must
All follow this, and come to dust.

Fear no more the lightning flash,
Nor the all-dreaded thunder stone;
Fear not slander, censure rash;
Thou hast finished joy and moan:
All lovers young, all lovers must
Consign to thee, and come to dust.

No exorciser harm thee!
Nor no witchcraft charm thee!
Ghost unlaid forbear thee!
Nothing ill come near thee!
Quiet consummation have;
And renownèd be thy grave!

Analysis:

                Shakespeare poem "Fear No More is actually a part of his drama symbolize at appears as a song on the death of one of the characters.This poem is based on the concept of immortality of death over power every thing else .This poem is divided  in to three stanza and every one of them gives promise to the inevitability of death.

               In the first stanza the poet says that A died person is free from the fear of extreme heat or the raging winds of strong winter or chilling winter.The people who are died after finishing their deeds on the earth and death is what you receive in return as a part of your wages.Death takes them to heaven .The poet further suggests that every human being is born with a precondition of death.irrespectively of charming boys or beautiful girls,or even poor chimney sweepers.Death is supposed to be the greatest of the levelers since inception.At the end every things turns to dust.

              In the next stanza the poet further orexis that we should not be afraid of any frant as they become helpless when we are died .We should not take care of food and clothes as they are not as important as we project them to be and after death.There is nothing like Superior or inferior feeling for a dead man everything is the same as everybody from the king to the scholar will have to die one day and turn to deist.

              In the last stanza the poet tells us not to be afraid of lightning or cloud-burst and we should not be after afraid of any negative opinions given by anybody,because for a dead man everything seems as their elders to be neutral even the young lovers have to go to the same place as their elders did that is to death and to dust.

             This poem suggested that the ultimate reality of life is death and death is actually freedoms which is justify properly in the song by William Shakespeare.

Play Review

   "Digdarshak The Hindi Play"

         The film screening committee of department of English ,M K Bhavangar University organised screening of  this play .Thanks to all committee member for the show.The central conflict of this play is about theater vs cinema .The protagonist of the play ,the Directer,is in favor of the theater. He dislike talented actors joining film industry and cinema.We have several age old controversies in the field of art and literature.Art for the sake of art vs art for the sake of life.,this is we also show in his play.

                      Theater and cinema debate goes on . there is a "Kunstlerroman" ideas .In this play directed was highly potential to be kunstlerroman where he ends arrogant rejection of the cinema life.Theater is more difficult than cinema .The cinema is more democratic whereas theater is authoritative almost dictarial. The directer is the dictator.In this play myth of Ashwathama also represented in this play.
