The Metaphysical Poetry:
A group of poets which emerged in the beginning of the 17th century come on tries to write to write poetry in which with the passing of the time came to be known as the metaphysical poetry John Donne was the founder of the metaphysical school of poetry and the other poets who followed the style of Donne are George Herbert , Abraham Cowley, Richards Creshow, Andrew Marvell and others. The poetry of this poets is knows as the metaphysical school of poetry.
It was Doctor Samuel Johnson who used the term " Metaphysical Poetry" for the first time for the poetry of Donne and his school while writing a biographical sketch on the life of Abraham cowelly, in his book "The Lives". Doctor Johnson made use of this term for the first time when Dr. Johnson use this term come up it was in a negative sense to criticize the poetry of Donne and this followers but with the poetry of Donne and this followers but with the passing of time the same term began a mark of appraisal of the metaphysical poetry the following are characteristic of the metaphysical poetry.
(1) All the metaphysical poet where literate and degree holders . They were scholar man of learning and wit they made a conscious attempt to display their scholarship and learning in that poetry. they waned to distinguish and differentiate them selves from the former poets of the Elizabethan age. So they made a conscious attempt to display scholarship and learning.
(2) A critic Helen.C. White has explained the reason behind while the made a conscious attempt to differ from others. According to her , all this poets would have been rejected had then written poetry like former poets. It was necessity for them to write poetry in a different way because by the time reading class wanted to read some thing different which was provided by the metaphysical poets Helen.c.white considers it the remand of time for the metaphysical poets to wright poetry in a different way the metaphysical wanted to give a unique identity to there poetry and so they tried to display scholarship in there poetry.
(3) The metaphysical unlike the Elizabeth poet did not use and employ traditional image in there poetry they made use of the far fetched images and conceits in there poetry. They try to bring images from various field just like, Geometry, Agriculture, Engineering, Biology, and even architecture. They images fro these field game in novelty to there poetry and it gave also mental exercise to the readers of there poetry in number of examples can be given about it.
-John Donne makes use of a biological image "The flee' for the - expedition of love in one of this poem.
-Andrew Marvell in this poem "To His coy mistress" uses a biographical image of compass for the excretion of love.
-George Herbert in his poem" The pulley". Makes use of an image from the field of mechanical engineering for the expression of his love for Christianity or religious, Herbert has also made use of an architectural image for the expression of Christianity in his poem "The church porch". In brief the metaphysical employed images of different field for there poetry.
(4) Dr. Johnson highlighting one drow back of the metaphysical poetry explain that there poetry stood more a trial of there finger and not the trial of ear. What Dr.Johnson wants to say is that there no music and rhythm in the poetry of the metaphysical poet.
